The Importance of Our Collective Bargaining Agreement and Union Independence
The Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) is more than a contract—it is the foundation of workplace fairness, accountability, and respect. Every provision contained within our agreement represents countless hours of negotiation, member involvement, and the collective strength of workers standing together to improve conditions for all.
Our CBA protects wages, benefits, working conditions, scheduling practices, seniority rights, grievance procedures, and due process. Without these protections, many workplace decisions could be made unilaterally, leaving employees with little recourse when concerns arise. The agreement provides a clear framework that benefits both employees and management by establishing expectations, responsibilities, and procedures that promote stability and consistency.
Equally important is the independence of our union. A strong union must remain accountable to its members and free from outside influence. Union independence ensures that decisions are made based on the interests of the workforce rather than the preferences of management or other external pressures. When members actively participate, attend meetings, ask questions, and hold leadership accountable, they strengthen the democratic principles that make our organization effective.
The strength of any labor organization is measured not only by the language in its contract but also by the unity and engagement of its members. Protecting our CBA requires vigilance, education, and participation from every member. Likewise, preserving union independence requires a commitment to transparency, solidarity, and member-driven decision-making.
Together, we defend the rights secured by previous generations while building a stronger future for those who will follow. Our contract and our independence remain essential pillars of that mission.
I have returned to the operations of the District and hope everyone enjoyed a safe and festive Independence Day holiday. I look forward to reconnecting with members and continuing to serve our collective interests. See you around.
