TriMet Center Transportation Labor Press Article by Gladys Melton
Mar 09, 2026

We want to extend our sincere apologies for an oversight in the March issue of the Labor Press. A message from Gladys Melton, Trimet Center Transportation Executive Board Officer, was unintentionally omitted. To ensure her voice is fully heard, we’re sharing her message with the membership below.

Greetings,

I hope the spring sign-up process is proceeding smoothly for everyone receiving this newsletter. Please note that you may always opt for the move-up program if needed. Looking ahead, TriMet is introducing a new system, Hastus; it is essential to arrive at work prepared, ensuring you have your badge, as it will be required for sign-in. Should you need assistance, please do not hesitate to ask, as the rollout will continue as scheduled.

I have spoken with ATU leadership about extending the window from 10 minutes to 20 minutes to provide additional flexibility. We are currently waiting for confirmation on whether this change will be approved.

At Center Garage, my primary concern remains mark-offs and ensuring everyone protects their time. This is a significant matter—failure to safeguard your time could result in termination and a subsequent eight-week period without income or unemployment benefits. It is imperative that you utilize FMLA or Paid Leave Oregon when appropriate. Remember, although accrued sick time is available, it does not replace the importance of protecting your time when you are absent, as this prevents any potential issues with the agency.

Regarding garage departures, it is critical to leave on time and maintain a low profile. When I began here twelve years ago, seasoned staff emphasized the importance of staying under the radar. To avoid mandatory meetings, ensure timely departure from the garage. If you experience bus issues, notify Dispatch using "pull-out repair" or an appropriate status, and inform your manager if you depart late to prevent receiving a meeting request.

If you receive a "come see me" notice while off the clock, please bring a time slip and have management acknowledge and sign off for the discussion so you are compensated for your time; payment is now calculated by the minute. If the meeting occurs during your shift, compensation is already ensured. Voluntary visits to management outside scheduled hours are at your discretion.

Please prioritize protecting your time, securing compensation for your work, and maintaining awareness of your health. Your health is your most valuable asset. While financial stability is important, prioritizing medical, dental, and vision benefits should not be overlooked. Schedule appropriate time off to care for yourself and avoid needing to mark off sick due to neglect. I urge everyone to take proactive steps toward well-being and time management. Know that support is available, but personal responsibility is essential.

In solidarity,

Light and love from Gladys M. Melton
