Shirley is the first woman, and the first African-American, to be elected President – Business Representative of Division 757 since it began in 1917. She grew up in Florida and Michigan, the daughter of migrant laborers. Once she graduated from university with her nursing license she worked in Detroit’s Henry Ford Hospital before moving to Portland in 1974 for the weather.

She worked as a nurse, and then got a job as a TriMet bus operator in 1981. She also married and raised children of her own, as well as 11 foster children. Her daughter currently works at TriMet, as did her husband, now retired. In the 34 years Block worked at TriMet, she’s been a bus operator, fare inspector, field operations coordinator, and road supervisor. She’s also served several terms as a member of the Union Executive Board.

Fred Casey grew up in a union household, he is a third-generation union member. His grandfather was in the Rail Workers Union for nearly half a century before his retirement. Fred’s father was a member of Local 290 Steamfitters Union as a Plumber until his death in 2012. Fred has always had a driver’s job since high school, and for a short while also worked as an IT contractor for Microsoft. Restless as he was and the lack of support for employees, he left the desk behind and returned to operating trucks and Union siblinghood.

Fred’s career with TriMet began in December 2013. He started as a part time Operator before moving to full time in 2014. In September of 2015, he was promoted to Station Agent. Frustrated with TriMet policies, Fred ran and was elected as an ATU 757 Executive Board Officer in June 2018. He continued to fight and support ATU members to provide better protection and making gains along the way. Fred was elected as the new Vice President of ATU 757 in 2021.

Fred is married to Clover Casey, who is also an ATU 757 member. Clover currently works at TriMet as a Transit Operator and serves the membership as a Shop Steward. Fred and Clover have a blended family of six children.

Mary began working at TriMet in 1998 as a Trip Planner in Customer Service, becoming a proud member of ATU. Mary and Jamie have two adult children. Their daughter Nicole works at Rogue Community College in Medford, Oregon, as an Admission Coach helping potential students explore all that Rogue Community College has to offer.

Mary & Jamie’s son Derek was a firefighter for Cal Fire in Shasta County, California. He graduated from the EMT/Paramedic Program at Butte College in California; Derek is a Paramedic Fire Fighter in South Lake Tahoe.  Derek has been dispatched to fight fires throughout California for weeks at a time, and he’s proud of the service that he and his fellow firefighters provide for the communities they serve.

Mary & Jamie are proud that their children have chosen to give back to the community as public servants.
