Workers at First Student in Corvallis have been dealing with poor lot conditions at the company’s facility on Reiman Ave., including potholes, standing water, and loose gravel. After reporting the issue to the company, nothing changed, and workers decided to file a report with Oregon OSHA.
As a result of ATU’s complaint, OSHA found First Student responsible for a failure to “ensure that walking-working surfaces were maintained free of hazards” at First Student’s Reiman lot, and proposed a fine of $630. You can review a copy of the citation below.
Although $630 is a drop in the bucket for a profit-hungry multinational corporation like First Transit, it’s still meaningful: as they bid on contracts in the future, First Student will have to report this violation as part of their safety record. And if First Student ever receives another OSHA citation in the future, penalties against the company will be steeper.
No matter where you work, you deserve a safe workplace. If you’re aware of hazards that pose a risk of injury or death, please bring them to the attention of your local Safety Committee, and then call the Union Hall at (503) 232-9144 so that we can explore whether filing a complaint with OSHA is appropriate.
