What’s New at ATU?

 May 2018 edition

Welcome to the latest edition of ATU 757’s e-newsletter for members, with updates about what’s happening inside your union, in the world of organized labor, and around our region. If you have a feature you’d like to see in a future edition, please contact ATU 757 staff!

In case you missed it…
• Operators at C-TRAN have overwhelmingly voted to APPROVE the Tentative Agreement between ATU and C-TRAN management. The vote was 163 in favor, to 26 opposed. Congratulations, sisters & brothers!
• On May 15th, Oregon voters went to the polls in our primary election – and ATU 757-endorsed candidates did well across the state. Check out our website for a recap of those election results.
• Burgerville workers have made history by voting to form the first federally-recognized fast-food union in US history! Workers at the SE 92nd & Powell store voted to form a union on April 23rd, and workers at the Gladstone store joined them on May 13th. The Burgerville Workers Union has requested that all supporters of labor CONTINUE TO BOYCOTT BURGERVILLE – until management comes to the negotiating table, keep Burgerville off of your dinner table!

ATU and JwJ Host Workers Rights Board Hearing on TriMet LIFT

On May 17th, we worked with Portland Jobs with Justice to hold a hearing of the Portland-area Workers Rights Board, concerning paratransit service in Portland. Paratransit, branded in and around Portland as TriMet LIFT, is provided by a Scotland-based for-profit corporation called First Transit, which also operates much of Oregon’s school bus service through their sister company, First Student.

Nearly 120 community members, transit workers, social-justice activists, and paratransit riders joined us to hear testimony on the conditions workers and riders face at TriMet LIFT. We heard heartbreaking testimony from riders who described long wait times on the bus, canceled rides, and low-quality service. Workers described inhumane working conditions, with drivers routinely denied bathroom and meal breaks, scheduling processes that make no sense, and a management that cares more about its bottom line than the workers who provide service.

One thing is clear: First Transit’s “profit over people” mentality is harming ALL of us.

This Workers Rights Board event is just the first step in our work to fight for justice for paratransit workers. Check out the recap from Portland Jobs with Justice, and stay tuned – we’re going to hold First Transit and TriMet accountable, but it’s going to take ALL OF US stepping up to make it happen.

On June 25th, we’ll host a follow-up event, “Community Speak Out on Public Transit and Housing Accessibility,” in partnership with Portland Jobs with Justice and the Real Choice Initiative. Join us at SEIU 503 (6401 SE Foster Rd., Portland) from 6:30 – 8:00pm to listen and share your story – and if you can join us at 6pm, we’ll be hosting a short rally in front of SEIU to build public awareness of our struggle!

Portland’s Special Education School Bus Drivers Need Your Support!
Special Education school bus drivers for Portland Public Schools safely and professionally transport hundreds of students to and from school every day. And they don’t just drive: they’re the first face from school that students see in the morning, and the last face they see when they go home. Drivers are first responders when there’s a crisis on the bus. When vehicles are stuck in the ice or snow or high water, drivers stay with their students until they get home, no matter how long it takes.

After nearly ten months working under an expired contract, and with PPS refusing to offer drivers a living wage, drivers are fed up and not taking it anymore. Portland Public Schools is STILL asking these drivers to accept low wages to transport our community’s most vulnerable youth. Enough is enough!

We need our community’s support to take this fight to the next level. So let’s start by showing the district that we’re united – please join us for a rally to show Portland Public Schools that we support Special Education school bus drivers! The rally will take place on Tuesday, May 29th, 5:30pm. We’ll meet at the Streetcar stop at N Ross Ave & N Broadway St (right where N Weidler and N Broadway split) in Portland.

For more information or to RSVP, please check out the event page on Facebook.
