What’s New at ATU?

 November and December 2018 edition

Welcome to the end-of-the-year edition of ATU 757’s e-newsletter for members, with updates about what’s happening inside your union, in the world of organized labor, and around our region. If you have a feature you’d like to see in a future edition, please contact ATU 757 staff!

In Case You Missed It…
  • Our sisters & brothers at the Burgerville Workers Union are on a roll – they’re the first fast-food union in United States history, and they just won their THIRD union election in the Portland area! The BVWU has asked that union supporters continue to boycott Burgerville until the company signs a fair contract for workers. Until they finish thing up at the negotiating table, let’s keep Burgerville off our dinner tables!
  • First Transit, the Scotland-based corporation which TriMet contracts to provide LIFT paratransit service in the Portland area, just won a major award from Portland Jobs with Justice: they’re the 2018 Scrooge of the Year, the worst bosses in the Portland region!

Important Notices for TriMet Retirees

TriMet retirees, we have two very important notices for you from our Benefits Coordinator, Leith Dist:

First, UnitedHealthCare is sending out new insurance cards, and you should be receiving those in the mail soon. Once you receive the new cards, please destroy your old cards and use the new card when you go to see your doctor.

Second, Social Security is mailing out their usual end-of-the-year statements, which will let you know how much your Medicare Part B premiums have increased. Retirees must send a copy of this notice to TriMet’s Benefits Department to make sure that the company is reimbursing you the correct amount on your monthly pension checks. TriMet should have mailed a packet of information about your benefits, which includes instructions on how to file these documents. If you didn’t receive that packet or you need more information about how to submit your Part B documents, please call TriMet Benefits at (503) 962-7625.

If you have any other questions or need support from the union, please call us at (503) 232-9144, and we’ll be happy to help however we can!

TriMet Contracts Out Powell Garage Employee Shuttle
As many of you have heard, TriMet’s Board voted earlier this month to contract out employee shuttle service during the rebuild of Powell Garage, rather than operate it in-house. You read that right: Oregon’s largest transit agency has decided that it does not have the in-house expertise to run a shuttle bus.

We have repeatedly demanded to bargain with TriMet over this service, and they have refused to do so. Check out the letter ATU leadership sent to TriMet management demanding that they cease moving forward with this contract, and stay tuned – we’re going to fight this contract tooth and nail.
