What’s New at ATU?

 August 2018 edition

Welcome to the latest edition of ATU 757’s e-newsletter for members, with updates about what’s happening inside your union, in the world of organized labor, and around our region. If you have a feature you’d like to see in a future edition, please contact ATU 757 staff!

In Case You Missed It…
  • The newest members of ATU Local 757, bus drivers in Hood River, won their first-ever contract! Read more about how our new sisters & brothers are reacting to this milestone.
  • From time to time, we request public records from government agencies to support our advocacy and organizing work, and we’re now making those available on our website! If you see something in these documents that catches your eye, please let us know by emailing our Communications Coordinator at
  • Last week, we put out a statement in solidarity with Local 689 in Washington DC, as they took a stand against providing special transportation for known hate groups in their community.
  • Current and retired union members, spouses and dependent children are eligible to apply for a college scholarship of up to $4,000 through Union Plus! Check out more and apply online.

It’s that time of year again – join us for the annual Labor Day Picnic at Oaks Park with the rest of Oregon’s labor movement!

Join us on Monday, September 3rd from 10am to 5pm at Oaks Amusement Park in Portland for fun, family, and food. And if you want to beat the traffic to Oaks Park, you can take the FREE shuttle train from SE 4th Ave. & Caruthers St., which runs once an hour to and from the Park.

Stay tuned to our website for more information to come about where to find Local 757’s picnic area!

Portland Public Schools Special Education School Bus Drivers Ratify Tentative Agreement!
On Tuesday, August 14th, PPS Special Education drivers voted to ratify a tentative agreement with the District by a vote of 71 to 9! The contract now moves onto the PPS Board of Education for final approval.

The 100+ school bus drivers at PPS provide home-to-school transportation for Portland Public Schools’ Special Education students. Like any bus driver, they are highly-trained professionals who have fulfilled rigorous training requirements and maintain multiple professional certifications. Every day, they safely transport about 600 students with special needs, and we do it with skill and pride. But they were barely scraping by on low wages, trying to keep up with Portland’s skyrocketing cost of living.

While this tentative agreement isn’t everything Special Education drivers wanted, it’s a major improvement that sets us up for success in our next negotiations, which begin next year. To build on this milestone, we’ll need every member of Local 757 to show their solidarity with these drivers – stay tuned for ways you can support their fight!

Congratulations to the Winner of ATU’s 2018 Tommy Clement Douglas Scholarship!
We’re excited to congratulate Riley Sanders, who was awarded the ATU International Tommy Clement Douglas Scholarship! Riley was nominated by his grandfather, Raymond Elder, a retired member of Local 757 who formerly worked at TriMet.

Riley plans to study political science at Colorado State University in Fort Collins next year, and has his eye on law school once he wraps up his undergrad. On behalf of Local 757 and the whole ATU family – congratulations and best wishes for your education!

If you or a family member is interested in applying for a scholarship through ATU International, please stay tuned – we’ll post the details for the 2019 scholarship program as soon as we receive them!
