In Memoriam: Ron Heintzman, 1953 – 2018

ATU Local 757 is mourning former ATU 757 and ATU International President Ron Heintzman, who passed away on April 2nd, 2018 at age 65.

Ron joined TriMet in 1982 as a Transit Police Officer, and quickly became active in Local 757. Concerned about operator safety, he ran for and was elected to the position of Recording Secretary/Business Agent in 1988. Ron was reelected to five consecutive terms as President/Business Agent until accepting an appointment as International Vice President in 2002. In 2009, he became ATU International’s Executive Vice President, overseeing the International’s organizing and advocacy work across North America, and was later appointed President of ATU International in 2010, serving through the end of that year.

Ron’s celebration of life will take place on Saturday, May 5th, 1:00 – 3:00pm, at the Mt. Angel Events Center. 210 Monroe St., Mt. Angel, OR. 97362. All who knew Ron or were touched by his legacy are invited to attend.

Read more about Ron’s service to the Union and the labor movement on our website.

ATU 757 Officer Elections Coming Up!

This year is an election year for ATU 757. Members will be voting on their preferred candidates for executive leadership: President-Business Agent, Vice President-Assistant Business Agent, and Financial Secretary-Treasurer. You will also have the opportunity to vote for your local Executive Board Officer and Liaison Officers.

Candidates will be formally nominated at the May 14th Charter meeting. Ballots will be mailed to members at the end of May, and votes will be counted on June 13th.

The Union’s website will be regularly updated with information and notices from the Election Committee about this year’s election. At the top of our website, you’ll see the phrase “2018 ATU 757 Elections” – if you hover your mouse cursor over that, you’ll see links to notices issued by our Election Committee, as well as the nomination and acceptance form if you want to run for office. Please review those notices, and make sure that we have your current mailing address on file so that we can ensure that you receive a ballot.

If you have any comments, questions, or concerns about ATU 757’s 2018 elections, please contact Election Committee Chair John Jamison, by calling (971) 732-3731, or by emailing atu757elections@atu757.org.

Save the Date – TriMet LIFT Operators Need Your Support on May 17th!

On May 17th, we’re partnering with Portland Jobs with Justice to host a hearing of the Portland Area Workers’ Rights Board on labor and human rights violations at TriMet LIFT, operated by First Transit, which provides paratransit services in the Portland region.

We will hear testimony from drivers and riders about labor and human rights violations they have experienced since First Transit took over local paratransit service. We’ll also hear testimony on possible alternatives and solutions, as well and recommendations from the Workers’ Rights Board panel. Let’s pack the room to show First Transit and TriMet that our community will not stand for poor treatment of workers and substandard paratransit service for riders!

Date: Thursday, May 17th
Time: 6:30 – 8:30pm
Location: Portland campus of the University of Oregon. 70 NW Couch St, Portland.
